In windows XP there is a wizard for recovering forgotten passwords. At first you have to create a reset disk. Don't worry this process is simple.
Creating a reset disk
To create a reset disk open start>Settings>Control Panel>User Accounts. Then select the desired account with administrative right, select “Prevent a forgotten password” on the left side. Click on next and define a drive as the storage location for the disk in the “forgotten password wizard”. On the next step enter the “Current user password” in the field with the same name and insert the disk into the previously selected drive . Then windows create and save the “userkey” file on it so that the older restore disks are now no longer valid. Now, keep the disk with the current “userkey” safely. If you don’t do this everybody can access you computer without the password.
Using the disk
On the login screen click your username and press enter, an empty and incorrect password, if you have forgotten it. Then a message saying “Click here to use the password reset disk” appears. Then click on the “forgotten password wizard”, click next. Enter your new password and confirm it by re-entering it. Click next then on finish and log in to your account with the new password. That’s it you have recovered the forgotten password.
